If you're new to sourdough... a sourdough starter is a live, fermented culture of flour & water. Once it becomes healthy & active, a small portion is added to your sourdough bread recipe.
So what kind of container is best for your sourdough starter? Does it even really matter?
Any non-reactive container can house a sourdough starter - don’t let trying to find the perfect jar stop you from baking your first loaves! But once (and if) you start baking more regularly, you may want to find something better.
Here is a list of things I recommend looking for in your sourdough starter jar:
🫙 A CLEAR JAR: as sourdough bakers, we want to be able to watch our starter grow. Plus, you want to be able to see when it’s reached its peak, so I recommend a jar you can see through.
🫙WIDE MOUTH JAR: sourdough starter jars can get messy fast. So I recommend a jar with a wide mouth - this makes it easy to add flour, water or more starter to the jar. It also allows you to stir it without making a big mess.
🫙JAR WITH A LOOSE LID: you want to be able to cover your sourdough starter loosely, so you want to avoid an air-tight lid.
*that being said, you may also find a jar cover or use a paper towel secured with a rubber band.
🫙GLASS JAR: glass is the best material for your sourdough starter - it won’t degrade over time or absorb aromas or flavors. It’s also less likely to leak unwanted chemicals into your sourdough starter. If you don’t use glass, my second choice would be CERAMIC.
Other things to look for:
-large enough to let your starter grow
-strong & sturdy
-easy to clean (dishwasher safe)
-few books & crannies for your starter to collect & dry
Bottom line, the best jar for your sourdough starter should be easy to clean, easy to use & not expensive!
