How Spending Time Outside Can Help Boost Your Mood.

Are you a new mom who is in the thick of it? Do you feel so stressed and overwhelmed you feel like you might explode? Do you feel down? Depressed? Anxious?


My answer:




SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. Put your little one in a stroller and go on a walk. Breathe in nature. Get a blanket and go sit by a lake. Whatever you need to do, just get outside.


BENEFITS OF DE-STRESSING OUTDOORS:


You'll get the Vitamin D you need. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of it in the foods we eat. So the best way to get enough vitamin D is to be exposed to the sun. In the summer this is easy, but wintertime can make it challenging. Get outside, even when it’s cold. You’ll feel better and your mood will improve.


Endorphins. When you move your body, you produce endorphins which help make you feel good. When you do this outside, you'll feel even better - it's the ultimate de-stressor.


You'll cut your stress. Being in nature lowers your cortisol (stress hormone) and decreases your heart rate.


You'll strengthen your immune system. As you are exposed to dirt, allergens, and more outdoors, your body becomes better-equipped to handle those things later. So if your kids need a good reason to go outside, this is it!

People always look at me like I'm crazy because I allow my daughter to run around barefoot in the mud - I always say she's just strengthening her immune system! Think about it...how do we normally catch an illness? By being trapped indoors with someone who is sick!


You'll improve your mood. Being in nature can help ease anxiety and depression.


Personal relationships. Time in nature can help with your relationships, too. Being in nature results in more prosocial behaviors, like generosity and empathy.


Re-connecting. One of the most basic human needs is to feel that you belong. Time outdoors results in a sense of belonging to the wider world that is vital for mental health.
